Adult reading speed for ordinary prose is commonly put at roughly 200 to 300 words a minute. Like most averages, it hides more than it reveals.
Your reading speed is not a fixed property of you. It changes with the material, the purpose and the day. A familiar novel might run comfortably above your average; a legal contract or a passage of dense philosophy will drop well below it, and should. Reading a recipe to cook from is a different act than reading a poem.
